The (now online) book club for readers who don't always have time to read. Have you wanted to be part of a book club but don't always have the time or patience to finish a whole book? Hesitant to commit to a new author you’re not sure you’ll like? The Short Story Club is the club for you. Commitment is low, enjoyment is high, and you’re sure to discover some new authors and styles to explore.

How it works

Join our club…

Each fortnight we’ll let you know how to access a short story online so that you can read along with us. Read the story during the week and then let us know what you think by joining one of our Wednesday video chats (register for lunchtime or evening sessions to receive a meeting invitation from us on the day). Don’t feel like chatting? Listen to our podcast here where we’ll regularly discuss the chosen stories as well as our other reading and watching.

Wednesday 12th August

James Baldwin

James Baldwin (1924-87) was an American writer known for novels, short stories, plays, essays and poetry – as well as for his activism. His work grapples with race, sexuality, class and masculinity and has been adapted into the award-winning documentary ‘I Am Not Your Negro’ and ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’.

Sonny's Blues

‘Sonny's Blues’, one of James Baldwin’s best-known and most-often anthologised short stories, follows an unnamed narrator who we know to be a black maths teacher in 1950s Harlem. The story begins with the arrest of man named Sonny, who we later discover is the narrator’s brother. Through the narrator’s memories we follow Sonny’s passion for jazz music and his eventual trouble with drugs. You can access the story at https://genius.com/James-baldwin-sonnys-blues-annotated

Registrations required.

Please see each week's booking for information on stories to be discussed and how to access them.
