The online club for readers who don't always have time to read. Have you wanted to be part of a book club but don't always have the time or patience to finish a whole book? Hesitant to commit to a new author you’re not sure you’ll like? The Short Story Club is the club for you. Commitment is low, enjoyment is high, and you’re sure to discover some new authors and styles to explore.

How it works

Join our club…

Every fortnight we’ll let you know how to access a short story online so that you can read along with us. Read the story during the week and then let us know what you think by joining one of our meetings on Zoom (register to the right to receive a video chat invitation from us on the day). Don’t feel like talking? Listen to our podcast on Soundcloud where after each session we'll discuss the story.

Last Night

James Salter’s ‘Last Night’ was published in The New Yorker in 2002. The story—one of his most well-known—follows a husband and wife through their last night together before the husband undertakes the task of euthanising his wife who’s terminally ill. A friend joins them to see the night out and events take an unexpected turn. You can read the story on The New Yorker's Website or listen to it read by Thomas McGuane.

James Salter

James Salter (1925-2015) was an American author and screenwriter, known by many as a ‘writer’s writer’ who, according to Richard Ford, wrote ‘American sentences better than anyone’. Salter began writing after serving as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force, penning novels, short stories, essays and other works throughout his career. His most well-known of these are the novels A Sport and a Pastime published in 1967 and Light Years published in 1975.
