The (now online) book club for readers who don't always have time to read. Have you wanted to be part of a book club but don't always have the time or patience to finish a whole book? Hesitant to commit to a new author you’re not sure you’ll like? The Short Story Club is the club for you. Commitment is low, enjoyment is high, and you’re sure to discover some new authors and styles to explore.

How it works

Join our club…

Each week we’ll let you know how to access a short story online so that you can read along with us. Read the story during the week and then let us know what you think – either by commenting on social media or joining one of our Wednesday morning or evening video chats. Register to receive a meeting invitation from us on the day. Don’t feel like chatting? Listen to our podcast where each week we’ll discuss the week's story and lead into the next.

Or start your own!

Want to host your own Short Story Club with friends or family but aren’t sure where to start? Send us an e-mail or give us a call on 1300 695 427 (between 10 and 4) and we’ll help you out with everything from discussion notes to video chat troubleshooting.

“With the Beatles” – Haruki Murakami

Bestselling Japanese author Haruki Murakami reflects on Beatlemania, falling in love for the first time and the unexpected ties those relationships can create.

Content Note: brief mention of suicide

If you’ve registered for RB Digital (free with your library card), you can download the February 15th 2020 issue of The New Yorker that contains “With The Beatles” to your smartphone, tablet, or computer. If you need help to do so please call or e-mail – we’re happy to talk you through the process. If you’d prefer not to use RB Digital, you can also read the story on The New Yorker's website.

Please register for either our 11am or 6pm video chat to discuss the story.

If you've never used Zoom (a video chat program) before just let us know when you register. We'll be in touch to make sure you're comfortable joining the meeting you've registered for.

Registrations required.
